Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (2001)

Overview

Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (Japanese: ファイナルファンタジー) is a 2001 science fiction animated film produced by Square Pictures in collaboration with Japanese and American producers. Directed by Hironobu Sakaguchi, creator of the Final Fantasy video game series, it was the first photorealistic computer-animated film in history and, at the time of release, the most expensive film based on a video game (budget $137 million).

Plot

The story takes place in 2065. Earth is infected by mysterious alien spirits (Phantoms) that destroy all life. Humanity is on the brink of extinction. Scientist Aki Ross, guided by strange dreams and under the mentorship of Dr. Sid, attempts to gather eight spirits to create a force capable of destroying the aliens and saving the planet. Together with the "Deep Eyes" squad, she must overcome obstacles and release the final spirit.

Production and Reception

The film was nominated for a Saturn Award for Best Science Fiction Film. Despite its revolutionary graphics, the film was a box office failure, grossing only $85 million, leading to financial losses for Square Pictures and the closure of the studio. Nevertheless, the film remains an important milestone in the history of computer animation.
