Annihilation (2018)

"Annihilation" is a 2018 science fiction horror film directed and written by Alex Garland, based on the novel of the same name by Jeff VanderMeer (the first book in the "Southern Reach" trilogy). ### Plot

Biologist and former soldier Lena (Natalie Portman) joins a secret expedition into the mysterious Area X — an anomalous zone expanding along the American coastline. Her husband Kane (Oscar Isaac) was the only one to return from a previous mission, but he is in critical condition. Together with a team of scientists — psychologist Dr. Ventress (Jennifer Jason Leigh), paramedic Anya (Gina Rodriguez), physicist Josie (Tessa Thompson), and geologist Cass (Tuva Novotny) — Lena ventures into the "Shimmer," where the laws of nature are distorted and mutations create bizarre and deadly life forms. The film explores themes of depression, grief, and the human tendency toward self-destruction. ### Production and Release
