Overview

"The Matrix" is a 1999 American science-fiction action film written and directed by the Wachowskis. The film is the first installment in the franchise of the same name. Starring: Keanu Reeves (Neo), Laurence Fishburne (Morpheus), Carrie-Anne Moss (Trinity), Hugo Weaving (Agent Smith) and Joe Pantoliano (Cypher).

The plot follows computer hacker Thomas Anderson (Neo), who learns that the world he lives in is a simulation created by intelligent machines to subdue humanity. Together with a group of rebels led by Morpheus, he attempts to free people and destroy the Matrix.

The film received critical and audience acclaim, grossing over 460 million dollars worldwide. It became famous for its groundbreaking "bullet time" visual effect and influenced popular culture.

Franchise Chronology

The Matrix franchise includes four films:

• "The Matrix" (1999) — the first film, in which Neo accepts his role as "The One" and begins the fight against the machines.
• "The Matrix Reloaded" (2003) — sequel, where Neo faces new threats and learns more about the Matrix.
• "The Matrix Revolutions" (2003) — conclusion of the original trilogy, the final battle between humans and machines.
• "The Matrix Resurrections" (2021) — fourth film, set 20 years after the events of the trilogy. Neo and Trinity return to once again confront the system.
