The Outwaters (2022)

The Outwaters is a 2022 American surrealist found-footage horror film written and directed by Robbie Banfitch. The film follows four travelers—Robbie, Michelle, Scott, and Angela—who venture into the remote Mojave Desert to make music and art. Their trip takes a terrifying turn when they encounter inexplicable, menacing phenomena under a blood-red sun. The narrative is presented through recovered footage, creating an atmosphere of dread and cosmic horror. The film premiered at the New Jersey Film Festival on February 12, 2022, and later received a wider theatrical release in February 2023 via Cinedigm, followed by streaming on Screambox. It has divided audiences, with some praising its atmospheric horror and others criticizing its abstract storytelling. As of now, no sequels or prequels have been announced, and the film is considered a standalone work.
