Synopsis
"The Queen's Gambit" is a 2020 American drama miniseries created by Scott Frank and Allan Scott, based on the 1983 novel of the same name by Walter Tevis. The series consists of 7 episodes and was released on Netflix on October 23, 2020.
Plot
The story takes place in the mid-1950s to 1960s. Nine-year-old Beth Harmon (Anya Taylor-Joy) ends up in an orphanage in Kentucky after her mother's death. There she discovers an incredible talent for chess, learning from the janitor Mr. Shaibel. At the same time, the girl becomes accustomed to the tranquilizers given to children at the institution. Later, Beth is adopted by the Wheatley family, and she begins participating in chess tournaments, quickly advancing to the world elite. The series explores the price of genius: addiction, loneliness, the struggle with inner demons, and the search for one's place in a male-dominated world.
